Urmas Sisask (b.1960) possesses a vision unique among Estonian composers; his music contains magical primeval power and a sincere sense of beauty. In 1988 Sisask completed this work consisting of 24 religious songs for mixed choir, chamber choir or quartet. All these songs are based on the kumayoshi mode – obtained from theoretical sound values for the rotations of planets. The most important aspect, apart from the use of kumayoshi, is no doubt the counterpoint. The order of the songs can be freely varied and they can also be performed independently. There is something for everyone and every purpose in this collection of beautiful but also powerful music.
